A legal nurse consultant is a registered nurse that helps attorneys understand medical terminology and medical records. Traditionally, attorneys would have their legal assistants look up definitions and try to make sense of medical records. More recently, attorneys have hired physicians to do this work for them. However, by using a legal nurse consultant attorneys can get the same service (although I would argue that our finished product is much better!) for a lesser cost. It's better for attorneys to use a legal nurse consultant to organize and translate medical records and use physicians as expert witnesses.

When a hospital is subpoenaed for medical records, they tend to send the records in a big file, they are not in chronological order, and they send lots of pages that aren't needed. Also, healthcare professionals have their own lingo that those outside of the medical field find hard to understand. I take those files, organize them in chronological order, and go through every page to pull out the information the attorney needs to make their case. I also include a fact summary with each case that summarizes the complaint, the corresponding medical records that help the client's case, and add my professional opinion related to causation. Most attorneys can use this fact summary sheet to develop their demand letter.

Legal nurse consulting is a valuable resource that is not used as much as it should be. Because we're nurses and not physicians we don't charge as much for our services, and we are more available to our clients. We also have a faster turnaround time because this is our business! And we take our business seriously! Our whole job rests on our attorneys being successful!
